World focusing on Nigeria for credible polls - ECOWAS Commission

The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, has urged INEC and political parties to obey the peace accord and conduct credible polls.

The ECOWAS Commission, after stakeholders gathering in Owerri at the weekend, has urged all 18 registered political parties and candidates in the forthcoming elections to be mindful that the world would be watching the exercise.

The President, represented by a regional body official, Dr Onyinye Onwuka, charged everyone concerned to adhere strictly to provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 guidelines and the peace accord they signed before the campaigns.

It charged to ensure credible, free and fair general elections at the February 25 and March 11 presidential, National Assembly, Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections.

INEC was charged to ensure unbiased conduct of the polls because the whole of Africa and the world are looking up to Nigeria, noting that the importance of Nigeria in the West African sub-region could not be overemphasized.

Touray sought for cooperation of all towards the achievement of a successful poll as he affirmed the body’s commitment to strategic support and intervention towards peaceful 2023 general elections.

He said the Commission “would sustain the partnership with stakeholders in that regard, advising that they should prevent conflicts and violence through inclusive opportunities, mediation and dialogue.”
