Peter Obi is a Third Force - Dele Momodu
Former presidential aspirant and PDP chieftain, Dele Momodu, on Tuesday, 6th February 2023, has stylishly come out to describe Nigeria's Party System as a ‘Two-Party’ one by referring to Peter Obi as a Third Force.

On Channels TV’s ‘The 2023 Verdict’, he said, the Labour Party had aspired to become a ‘Third Force’ to bring change to the political landscape, but is ‘struggling’ because a presidential race is not a marathon and ‘takes time to build bridges’.
“Usually, in many countries,” he had said, “you have two mainstream political parties and candidates. In the case of Nigeria, now we seem to have a third force, the fourth force is not doing much.”
Even though he categorises Obi as part of the ‘leading candidates,’ stating them as Atiku, Tinubu, Obi, (note the arrangement), then others, the use of the term embeds much in portraying Obi’s ‘probable’ fate in the elections.
What is a ‘Third Force’? Though originally used by the ANC in the 1980s/1990s with what is of no ‘concern’ in this piece, politically, it is a party other than one of the two dominant ones in a ‘two-party political system’.
So in order of ‘importance’ at the moment in Nigeria, we can deduce from Momodu’s thesis that what holds in our country now, is the APC as the Ruling Party, the PDP as the Opposition Party/Watch-Dog and the LP as the Third Force.
He acted coyly/diplomatically when asked if he acknowledges Obi as a third force, saying he is a democrat and won't disparage anybody. “He (Obi) is a third force but how forceful is that third force is the question.”
His perceived acknowledgement of Obi is simply a ‘shaper’ of the contest between the APC and PDP, not having any other benefit whatsoever. His candidate, Atiku, he asserts, is he who “has what it takes to reposition the country.”
It is already a game-play. Mind games blowing from all angles. The dress rehearsals are coming thick and strong. Darwin will refer to it as the survival of the fittest, which Hobbes will also corroborate. We await the outcome in akimbo.
